Here are TABA's October updates with upcoming events in October and November.

1. TABA 2013-2014 Board Elections:

Reminder to all voting members to return the completed ballot for the 2013-2014 TABA Board to president@tabalawyers.org by October 28, 2013!

2. Thai Elder Law Day (11.2.13, 8:30am-1:00pm, Palm Village Senior Housing, 9050 Laurel Canyon Blvd., Sun Valley, CA 91352):

The Thai American Bar Association and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles are excited to host an Elder Law Day at Palm Village Senior Housing on November 2, 2013. We are currently looking for volunteer attorneys, law students, notaries public, and Thai‐speaking interpreters. No experience necessary! Training will be provided. 1 hour of MCLE credit will be provided for the attorney training. Please contact Yanin Senachai at ysenachai@gmail.com by Friday, October 18, 2013 to sign up as a volunteer. Please also indicate whether you can speak Thai.

3. Conversation with Helen Wan, Lawyer and Author of The Partner Track (10.22.13, 6-8:00 p.m. at Gibson Dunn's Los Angeles Office):

TABA is proud to co-sponsor a night of conversation with Helen Wan, author of The Partner Track, on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Gibson Dunn's Los Angeles office. This book, about a young Chinese-American woman poised to become the first minority female partner at a prestigious global firm, is a rarity in the fiction space. Helen explores how diversity, politics, and difference can complicate the journeys of talented diverse lawyers as they advance up the ranks. In New York, the reception to Helen and the book has been phenomenal and the hopes are that the West Coast will be just as good (if not better!). Please RSVP to AHuynh@gibsondunn.com.

4. Eviction Defense and Domestic Violence Pro Bono Training (10.23.13):

TABA is proud to celebrate National Pro Bono Week (October 20-26, 2013) by co-sponsoring two CLE trainings in coordination with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA). LAFLA is offering two concurrent training sessions. Attorneys will be expected to handle one pro bono case within one year of the training. LAFLA will provide the training, materials, facility, up to 2 hours of CLE, screened cases and malpractice coverage for attorney volunteers.

Attorneys working on eviction defense will be assisting LAFLA’s Eviction Defense Center (EDC) & Housing Unit. Attorneys working on domestic violence and VAWA will assist the Center for Pacific Asian Family (CPAF) DV clients through LAFLA’s Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Community Outreach Unit. CPAF assists DV clients with Emergency shelter, Transitional shelter, a 24 Hour Hotline and family crisis intervention services.

5. Volunteers Needed for 14th Annual APA Holiday Toy Drive and Reception on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 6:00pm at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles:

TABA is co-sponsoring the APA Toy Drive, which is held by several Asian and Pacific Islander professional organizations. The purpose is to gather toys and donate them to various non-profit organizations who serve low-income families in need of toys and gifts for the holidays. Each co-sponsoring organization is responsible for recruiting volunteers from their respective organizations, and TABA would like to invite you to become a volunteer. This event would not be possible without the contributions of volunteers, so please join us! Email khommarath.kathy@gmail.com to sign up or for questions/comments.

6. TABA on Thai TV:

NAT TV's Lawyer Talk program is looking for attorneys to appear to talk about discrete areas of law. The television appearance basically consists of one and a half hour live one-on-one interviews in which attorneys talk about themselves, how they got to to where they are, and discuss the area of law in which they practice. NAT TV is aired nationally and in Canada. This is great way for you (and TABA!) to gain exposure and publicize your services. It is not necessary to speak Thai because the show host will assist with interpretation for the audience.
